Sometimes, It Takes Someone Else to Inspire the Dream Inside Us.
Bestselling author Sean Platt might have never started writing if not for a gift from his wife on his 30th birthday. She bought him a Macbook, and told him to get started doing what she knew he was supposed to do. Cindy gave Sean the unparalleled gift of her unflagging support, fueled by the unflinching belief that he was born to tell stories. Writer Dad is a love letter to Cindy and Sean’s family, but also to the craft of writing. It chronicles his first painful but necessary years, through his eventual successful as a bestselling indie author. Writer Dad is for fans of Sean's work, those curious about the everyday reality of a growing writer's life, and those seeking inspiration for their own journeys forward. I'm a fan of Sean Platt. I enjoy reading his fiction and I enjoy watching him on his weekly show, The Self Publishing Podcast. Because of that, I was pretty sure that I was going to like this book at least a little bit.Well, I liked it a LOT more than that. I loved it.
It's a very inspiring book. You're not just getting a story here about how a successful writer became a success. Yes, in part, it's a story about a man and the dreams he's had and how he made them come true. In that regard, I think that anyone (not just writers) would enjoy and be inspired by the book.
But this book is even more than that. It's also a great love story.
Sean mentions at the beginning of the book that he's written it for his wife Cindy and for their children. Even when Cindy and the kids aren't mentioned by name, you can still feel them on every page of this book. It's obvious at every moment that Sean loves his family more than anything in the world.
A lot of writers couldn't pull off writing and sharing about that kind of devotion without it sounding too corny, fake, or over the top. Well, that's not the case here. Sean shares all kinds of stories about Cindy and the kids in ways that always read as sincere. A lot of the stories are funny and a lot are often touching.
I'll be honest. There were a couple of times that the book actually made me cry. Not because of any sad parts of their story, but because I was moved by how awesome Sean and his family seem to be with each other. They hit a lot of obstacles and big problems on their way to where they are now and they seemed to get through them because of how great of a family they are.
But don't take my word for it. Go and read this great book.

Writer Dad Life Better With the Right Words Sean Platt 9781491294529 Books Reviews
...especially one just starting out, I think WRITER DAD is an essential read. No, it won't teach you how to structure a story, market a book or anything like that--you know, the fancy stuff that usually gets people excited. WRITER DAD is about something much more important.
Sean's stories explain that the most important skill of the professional writer is not her ability with words, her copywriting technique or her ability to build an author platform (although all of these are great to have).
No, the only skill required for success is the ability to do the work. Every day, and a lot of it. And, simple as that is, it isn't easy. Good a gig as writing is, it's still a job. WRITER DAD shows this fact by chronicling 5 years of hardship, success, struggle and millions of words. It shows you what you're in store for if you want to "make it" as a pro writer. It allows you to answer, up front, the age-old question is the juice worth the squeeze?
If you already know the answer to this question (it's been yes for me for a long time) prior to reading WRITER DAD, it's also a thoroughly entertaining autobiography and an interesting glimpse into a writer's life. Either way, I think you'll get something out of it. But if you're a writer, then you must pick this up--it could be the most valuable lesson you'll find.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading this book. I'm a big fan of the author's podcasts, but he doesn't mention much of his personal life there. This book is an autobiography covering the five years from 2008 to 2013. I've read a few autobiographies before, but this is by far the best one. Often, other autobiographies sugarcoat the truth, or shy away from the pain of life. This book doesn't do that at all.
This book is full of truth and pain, from what seems like it's been a difficult life. That's not to say that the author has been through violence or drugs, but he has certainly seen more financial hardship than I, and most people I know, have.
The fact that Sean Platt is a successful author seems to be in spite of, rather than because of, circumstances. A lot of it has to be owed to his wife, Cindy, who practically forces him to write when he feels he's not good enough. A constant series of events seem to be forcing the author away from writing fiction. And yet he keeps coming back to it.
This book is intriguing, thrilling and captivating. I wasn't expecting to have that reaction to an autobiography, but that's the reaction I had. I'd recommend it, even if you don't know the author.
